The silk finish — also called satin or leather finish — turns granite into a smooth, matt surface that is soft to the touch, without the mirror shine of a polished stone. It keeps the natural depth of the colour, hides fingerprints and water marks, and wears better than a polished face. It is achieved by working the surface through a sequence of diamond abrasive brushes, and this article explains why it works and how to do it.
Silk, honed or polished — what's the difference?
All three describe how much you refine the surface. A polished face is taken to a high gloss and reflects like a mirror — beautiful, but it shows every scratch and smudge. A honed face is flat and matt, stopped before gloss. The silk or satin finish sits between them: smooth and soft to the touch with a gentle sheen, more forgiving than polished and warmer than a plain honed surface. It is a favourite for kitchen worktops, bathrooms, facades and flooring for exactly that reason.
Why diamond brushes?
You cannot get an even satin texture with a rigid pad — it rides on the high spots and leaves the surface patchy. A diamond abrasive brush is made of flexible, grit-loaded filaments that follow the contour of the stone, conditioning the whole surface evenly and reaching into edges and bevels without damaging them. Step by step
- Clean the granite surface.
- Start with a coarse-grit diamond brush (around 36#) to open and even the surface.
- Climb progressively through the finer grits — without skipping steps — up to roughly 400–800#, stopping where the satin sheen appears rather than going to full gloss.
- Inspect and adjust to the finish you want.
- Final clean to remove dust and debris.
Tip: match the brush to the granite's hardness to avoid scratches, and run the finer grits wet to keep the surface cool and the finish even.
