To grind, hone and polish natural or engineered stone with a brush, you match three things to the job: the abrasive (diamond or silicon carbide), the grit (coarse to fine), and whether you run dry or wet. Get those right and a brush does in one or two passes what a rigid disc needs several steps and far more care to achieve. This article explains how to choose, and the sequence that gets you from a rough surface to a finished one.
Why a brush instead of a rigid disc or pad?
A rigid abrasive only touches the high points of a surface and has no give, so it is easy to over-grind an edge or leave the profile uneven. An abrasive brush is made of flexible filaments loaded with grit: it follows the contour of the stone, reaches into textured and bevelled surfaces, and removes material evenly without gouging. That is what lets you cut steps out of the process — you are conditioning the whole surface at once instead of chasing flat spots.
Diamond or silicon carbide — which one for your stone?
The abrasive is chosen from the hardness of the stone and the goal:
- Diamond — for hard stone: granite, quartz and ceramic/porcelain. Diamond keeps cutting where softer abrasives glaze over. Use it to grind, hone and bring up a honed or polished face on hard material. See the Diamond Fickert brush range.
- Silicon carbide — the versatile choice for softer and mixed work: marble, limestone, terrazzo and cleaning. It moves from grinding to polishing across grits and is the usual pick for a satin or antiqued look. See the Carbide Fickert brush range.
Both mount on standard Fickert holders and on the machines you already run, so you change the finish by changing the brush, not the setup.
Which grit, in what order?
Grit works like sandpaper: a low number (36–60) cuts fast and removes scratches, deep marks or a saw finish; higher numbers (200, 400, up to 800 and beyond) refine and build shine. The rule is never to skip more than one step — jumping from coarse straight to fine leaves scratches the fine grit cannot erase, and you lose the time you thought you saved. For a polished granite face you typically climb 36 → 120 → 400 → 800; for a honed marble surface you stop earlier, around 200–400.
Dry or wet?
Both work; the choice is about heat and finish. Run wet when you want the smoothest result and on the finer grits — water carries away swarf and stops the surface overheating, which protects both the stone and the brush. Run dry for speed and where water is a nuisance, on the coarser grinding and cleaning stages. Many jobs start dry and finish wet.
A typical sequence
On a granite worktop with a saw finish: dry-grind with a coarse diamond brush to flatten and remove the cut marks, step up through the mid grits, then switch to wet and climb to 800 for a bright, even face. On a marble restoration: clean first with a silicon carbide brush, lift the ingrained dirt without scratching, then a fine wet pass for a soft honed finish. In a real limestone restoration we cleaned years of grime with carbide brushes and finished with a fine grit for a uniform matt surface — no aggressive stripping, no damage to the stone.
